JOB DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a dynamic, hardworking, and creative Booker for Varney & Co. The Booker is responsible for booking guests, making pitches, and handling newsmaker requests.  It further requires strong feature and segment production and a strategic vision for bookings. This individual is the show's booking representative and is responsible for continuously upgrading bookings for live daily interviews in addition to special projects. The Booker is also responsible for researching and pitching unique new guests, and compelling segments daily, and for future planning. This person must be familiar with all aspects of television production including graphics, editing, digital newsgathering, and live remote broadcasting, and be comfortable working in a collaborative environment.

The Booker must also be able to react quickly in breaking news situations and line up officials, lawmakers, outside reporters, and principals while we are live, as well as when news breaks during the day. The Booker should also have a strong grasp of using social media to find people involved in breaking news situations in remote areas. This person must also be able to develop, cultivate, and maintain new guest relationships on behalf of the program and the network.

You will be offered the following shift:

Monday-Friday, 6:00 AM ET start time

You must be flexible to work other days with breaking news.

This position may require travel for breaking news bookings.

A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Book top-tier guests for the show on a daily basis

  • Conduct pre-interviews and research packets for various guests and segments

  • Strategize and collaborate with colleagues about the best guests to book for the show and on best booking approaches

  • Pitch different guests and topics that would be a good fit for the show

  • Pitch unique and interesting stories

  • Manage daily deadline turnarounds of a live show

  • Work in a fast-paced environment where changes happen minute to minute, hour by hour

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • 3+ years of newsroom experience in television, including booking and producing experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field of study preferred, or equivalent experience

  • An extensive rolodex and the know-how to book everyone from high-profile guests, celebrities, and people at the center of major news stories

  • Knowledge of and passion for current events, politics, and issues in global affairs

  • Strong editorial judgment and newsgathering skills

  • Strong organizational skills and writing skills

  • Exceptional editorial skills; the ability to recognize stories with high potential for compelling television

  • Ability to be forward thinking and know which guests to book for future big news days

  • Ability to properly vet guests to determine energy level and knowledge of the subject matter 

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment where changes happen minute to minute, hour by hour

  • Willingness and ability to work under tight deadline pressures while juggling long-term bookings

  • Ability to keep show team up to speed with current/breaking news during after-hours

  • Excellent communication skills

  • Flexibility to work overnight and on weekends when breaking news merits

Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay rate/range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is $75,000.00-88,000.00 annually. This role is also eligible for various benefits, including medical/dental/vision, insurance, a 401(k) plan, paid time off, and other benefits in accordance with applicable plan documents. Benefits for Union represented employees will be in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
