FOX Television Stations owns and operates 29 full power broadcast television stations in the U.S. These include stations located in 14 of the top 15 largest designated market areas, or DMAs, and duopolies in 11 DMAs, including the three largest DMAs (New York, Los Angeles and Chicago). Of these stations, 18 are affiliated with the FOX Network. In addition to distributing sports, entertainment and syndicated content, our television stations collectively produce approximately 1,200 hours of local news every week. These stations leverage viewer, distributor and advertiser demand for the FOX Network’s national content.

JOB DESCRIPTION

WTTG/WDCA – Assignment Editor (Regular Full-Time)

FOX 5 DC/FOX 5 Plus has an opening for an energetic and competitive news enthusiast. Ideal candidates will thrive in a fast-paced newsroom and be able to demonstrate how they take ownership in the day-to-day newsgathering. This job is for the strategic problem-solver who can think quickly under pressure and resolve issues with a positive, solution-oriented approach. We are looking for a relationship builder who aggressively connects with sources and community partners for information and story leads. Candidates must have an advanced ability to organize and prioritize time sensitive media content.

JOB HIGHLIGHTS

  • Generate story leads and respond to breaking news for broadcast and digital.

  • Proactively gather and communicate news content to use in newscasts and on digital platforms.

  • Organize logistics and track details for stories and crews.

  • Coordinate daily assignments of news coverage and special events assignments.

  • Develop contacts and sources to advance stories beyond a press release.

  • Monitor police and fire scanners and other sources of breaking news.

  • Maintain contact with law enforcement, fire, government agencies and other key community partners for up-to-date information and story leads.             

  • Handle high volume email and phone traffic.

  • Think critically under pressure and work professionally with colleagues and community partners.  

  • Daily collaboration with reporters/anchors, photographers, production teams, management, and other staff members.

  • Participate in editorial, department and station meetings.

  • Other duties as assigned.

WHAT YOU NEED TO HAVE

  • Bachelor's degree, preferred focus in Communications, Journalism, or related field.

  • Minimum two years of experience as an Assignment Editor in a medium to large television market.

  • Knowledge of ethical and journalist legal parameters for mass media.

  • Exceptional knowledge of television news production and electronic and social media newsgathering.

  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Solid news and editorial judgment.

  • Experience with newsroom computer systems, including iNews.

  • Social media expert.

  • Strong sense of urgency.

  • Must be organized, creative, and detail oriented.

  • Ability to take direction and work under deadline pressure.

Candidates must be able to work flexible hours – early mornings, late nights, weekends, and holidays may be required.
