JOB DESCRIPTION

The Big Ten Network is seeking a Vice President of Engineering to join their team in Chicago, IL. The position manages the staff responsible for the maintenance and operation of the Big Ten Network and all related technical equipment, including studio and remote productions, “At Home”/”Remi” live event productions, digital media, and transmission facilities. Responsibilities also include managing the operation and maintenance of the Big Ten Network broadcast facilities located at each Big Ten University. This encompasses campus studios, portable production systems, and LAN/WAN connections to the Universities as well as planning, budgeting, and design of all technical and facility changes/additions. Additionally, the incumbent will be responsible for annual capital budgeting and providing critical support, guidance, and strategy for capital budget purchases.

The ideal candidate will need to have an extensive knowledge of broadcast/systems engineering, including all IP-based video streaming and file transfer technologies as well as a thorough understanding of network and computer systems engineering and operation.

The Big Ten Network produces over 500 live events annually on the linear network, many of those are produced with an “At Home/Remi” model from the network's four control rooms. In addition, the network produces daily studio programming from its Chicago facility. Big Ten Network also produces over 1,700 streamed events through its innovative Student U programming. The conference will be expanding to 18 schools beginning in 2024 with the addition of USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington.

A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supervise the current Director of Systems Engineering/Director of Broadcast Engineering and assign and manage project tasks they are responsible for executing
  • Set project priorities and implement design and drafting standards and procedures to ensure standardized and accurate system design and documentation
  • Effectively communicates project expectations to team members and stakeholders - keeping all stakeholders updated on project status and progress
  • Develop engineering schedules to ensure that all content being produced has engineering support
  • Monitor the progress of the implementation of a project and estimate the completion date of projects
  • With the support of the FOX engineering team, work with all vendor relationships and capital purchases
  • Project resource estimation and develop capital budget proposals
  • Delegate tasks and responsibilities to ensure the successful implementation of a project
  • Develop a strong working relationship and regular communication with FOX Engineering
  • Communicate with Contracted Design Engineers, Managers, and Project Managers to resolve design discrepancies or issues
  • Ensure completed work is accurately documented, deviations from the intended design need to be marked up (“redlined”) and properly documented with the CAD Engineers 
  • Perform and supervise end-of-year and interim inventory counts
  • Maintenance and inventory of company-owned equipment 

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • 10+ years of experience with Network Design, Operational Support, and Hands-On implementation 
  • 7+ years of engineering management experience
  • Knowledgeable in all areas of production and master control and familiar with all broadcast systems including SDVN, PTP, IP Audio, transmission encode and decode, OTT
  • Knowledgeable in all areas of technical production, and familiar with all production equipment and networking
  • Strong analytical/communicative skills
  • Dynamic leadership and people skills, ability to connect with all departments in an office environment
  • Reasonable mathematical skills, strong reasoning skills and technical troubleshooting skills
  • A self-starter who pays attention to details and has strong project management skills
  • Ability to clearly convey ideas and concepts to support management business objectives is essential. 
  • Able to work long hours/schedule and weekend and holiday shifts
  • Highly proficient in MS Office

NICE TO HAVE BUT NOT A DEALBREAKER

  • BS degree or equivalent experience in electronics or broadcast engineering
  • Experience in a file-based workflow and in a 720p High-Definition production facility
  • CAD experience
  • CCNA and MCSE certification
