JOB DESCRIPTION

Varney & Co is looking for a Freelance Writer/Associate Producer with a strong control room presence and editorial judgment. As a Freelance Writer/Associate Producer, you will write scripts, produce segments, make graphics, pitch/write compelling story ideas, and write banners under intense deadline pressure for a live, breaking 3-hour markets show. You must be adaptable and quick to respond to breaking news. You also need stellar communication skills and are looking to grow within the company and take on more responsibilities. You think outside the box and can pitch/write compelling story ideas that align with the voice and brand of the show, and you can keep up with the fast-paced and unpredictable environment of news and breaking news as it happens.

A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Write vo's, vo/sot's & reporter stories under tight deadline pressure 

  • Write dynamic scripts

  • Produce multiple segments that are element and banner intensive

  • Pitch and execute creative and innovative ideas for segments and guests

  • Work closely with Line Producers, Bookers, and Production Assistants

  • Participate in editorial planning and direction of the show

  • Research and craft stories in a way that resonates with our viewers 

  • Create graphics and edit video/sots via your desktop 

  • Communicate critical story information with producers and managers

  • Pitch compelling story ideas

  • Be read in on all the latest news

  • Think outside the box to tell a story

  • Understand the importance of utilizing and writing to video

  • Craft bold banners that stand out and catch the viewers’ eye

  • Scour social media for elements or information that the competitors missed 

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • 5+ years of professional experience in a live television control room

  • 1 year of experience producing in a control room

  • Thorough knowledge of U.S. business news and politics

  • Strong editorial judgment

  • Fast and accurate writing

  • Ability to work under intense deadline pressure

  • Ability to adapt quickly and work hard and fast during breaking news without compromising accuracy

  • Solid news judgment and understanding of fair and balanced journalism

  • Thorough knowledge of business news, current events, US politics, geopolitics, foreign policy and history

  • Strong editorial judgment

  • Fast and accurate writing

Pursuant to state and local pay disclosure requirements, the pay range for this role, with final offer amount dependent on education, skills, experience, and location is: $28.61-35.00 per hour. We provide Freelancers medical/dental/vision insurance and 401k after they meet eligibility criteria and any State required time-off, in accordance with applicable plan documents. Benefits for Union represented employees will be in accordance with the applicable collective bargaining agreement.
